03-01-2012 - Christmas and New Year’s in Hanukkah

On behalf of all the children and workers of Hanukkah, we wish you a happy 2012. Hanukkah has welcomed the New Year with joy. Christmas has also been one big party.

An announcement from Marjolein, one of the volunteers, on facebook, had resulted in a wonderful contribution with which we were able to organize an unforgettable Christmas day for the children. We rented a bouncing castle and an inflatable slide. After church had closed, the children started sliding on the slide that had been covered in soap and they didn’t want to leave it until it got dark. The kids also got balloons and face paint. When everybody had taken a shower, washed off the soap and was wearing the special Christmas attire that they had received that morning, it was time for the Christmas dinner: Rice and macaroni with chicken and sheep meat. It was wonderful sight. What made it even more special was that the Hanukkah family was more complete than ever: A lot of children that have left Hanukkah came back for a few days. It was amazing to have Shariff, Belinda, Leticia and Anita with us.

On New Year’s Eve, the older children, workers, volunteers and some other churchgoers started praying around 10 pm. That went on until just before midnight, when we started counting and welcomed the new year with a lot of dance, songs and many hugs.
