22-06-2011 - Akwia and Gilberta

Last week two new members were added to the Hanukkah family. The Social Welfare brought Akwia, a 17 year old girl and her 8 month old daughter, Gilberta. Akwia told that she was abandoned by her family because she got pregnant. Now, she no longer has a place to live. Mariette and Moses decided to let her sleep in Hanukkah for one night.

The next day, Mariette went to Akwia’s family to find out more about her situation. Together with the Social Welfare, she went to the village where the family lives. It turned out to be true that Akwia used to be living with her uncle, but that he did not want to see her again. Her parents have died at a young age. Mariette also went to look for Gilberta’s father, but he does not acknowledge his daughter.

For the time being, Akwia and Gilberta will therefore stay in Hanukkah. When they are getting used to it, Moses and Mariette will try to find out what Akwia wants to do in life and how they can help her.
